New York ranks fifth-best state for working dad and mom in response to new research

ALBANY, NY (NEWS10) – It’s been a challenging year for working parents in the United States. New York is one of seven states that offer paid family vacations, and one of the reasons the state is in the top ten states for working parents. according to Business.org.

New York scored 66.6 out of 100, based on six metrics used by Business.org to determine which states, including the District of Columbia, were the most parent-friendly. Family and sick leave, the rent-to-income ratio, and the change in the unemployment rate from 2019 to 2020 were some of the metrics assessed.

Metric information was collected from the US Census Bureau and the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, and each metric was weighted as a percentage. The unemployment rate changed from September 2019 to September 2020, and the income to rent ratio was 30% each, making a total of 60%.

Paid family leave, medical leave and job-protected leave (lower employer size / lower duration of employment / working hours) were each counted with 10%, which makes up the remaining 40%.

The “Rent as a Percentage of Household Income” for New York was 30.1% and the change in the unemployment rate was + 5.8%. Since the state offers paid family / sick leave and job-protected leave, it received the full 40%.

Nevada was ranked the worst state for working parents. The “rent as a percentage of household income” was 30.5%, while the change in the unemployment rate was + 8.9%. The state does not offer paid family / sick leave or job-protected leave.

In June 2019, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) put the United States on the list of family-friendly countries for not granting federal maternity or paternity leave.

The US joined nine other countries, including Canada, Mexico and New Zealand, with no “comparable data” to determine the percentage of children under three in childcare, and the percentage of children over three and school age children in childcare .
