Feb. 21 marks 56 years since Civil Rights icon Malcolm X was assassinated

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) – Sunday, February 21, it will be 56 years since civil rights icon and activist Malcolm X was assassinated.

Born Malcolm Little joined the Nation of Islam in prison and took the name Malcolm X.

He quickly became one of the organization’s most influential leaders before leaving the organization in 1964.

He was killed the following year and three men were later convicted of murder.

Over the years there have been conspiracy theories as to whether someone else was responsible.

At a press conference on Saturday, Malcolm X’s daughter joined civil rights attorney Ben Crump.

They claimed they had evidence that the New York Police Department and the FBI conspired to have him murdered.

Ray Wood, an undercover cop at the time, stated in a deathbed letter that the NYPD and the FBI had conspired to undermine the legitimacy of the civil rights movement and its leaders.

“This letter helps me understand the pain and guilt Ray has felt over the past 55 years,” said Reginald Wood Jr., Ray Wood’s cousin. “He’s conspired to help the NYPD murder Malcolm X.”

They call on the Manhattan District Attorney to take action and offer “restorative justice”.

A spokesman for the NYPD said they were keen to assist with investigations.
