Consultant Carl O. Sherman’s Assertion on Assembly with Civil Rights Chief Reverend William J. Barber II
Washington, DC – Civil rights leader Reverend William Barber II met with members of the Texas House of Representatives blocking recent attempt by Governor Abbott and the Texas Republicans to take targeted action against the vote.
During his meeting with the Democrats at Texas House, Reverend Barber II – a minister, social activist, and co-chair of the Campaign for the Poor – spoke passionately about the need to protect sacred freedom of choice in order to maintain our democracy.
“You do not swear to moderate the protection of the electoral law,” said Barber. “It’s a moral mandate.”
Texas State Representative Carl O. Sherman (D-109) made the following statement in response to the meeting:
“It was a great honor to hear from one of America’s great civil rights icons,” said Sherman. “We are grateful for the lifelong work of Reverend Barber in the fight for civil rights and social and economic justice. We are so proud to share his values and appreciate his standing with us as we continue to fight for freedom of choice. “
During a conversation with the Democrats in the Texas House, Reverend Barber II stated that after the failed uprising, the right to vote and the filibuster are now used as weapons to threaten our democracy. Just like the Democrats at Texas House in Washington DC did
Reverend Barber II also called on Congress to pass the For the People Act.
“If 51 votes are enough to bring someone to the Supreme Court for life,” said Barber II, “then 51 votes are enough to save democracy.”
