WASHINGTON – As the nation celebrates the start of LGBTQ Pride Month, 60 national civil and human rights organizations today declared their support for transgender students and condemned discriminatory government proposals that would harm both cis and transgender girls and women. The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights and partners penned an open letter calling for the full involvement of transgender students in educational offerings, including after-school activities such as athletics.
“As organizations that are very interested in ending gender discrimination and giving girls and women equal access to athletics, we support laws and guidelines that protect transgender people from discrimination, including participating in sports, and we reject the proposal, that girls and women who are cisgender benefit from the marginalization of girls and women who are transgender. We firmly believe that an attack on transgender students is an attack on civil rights, ”the groups wrote.
The letter also calls on heads of state to prioritize breaking down gender and racial differences in sporting opportunities and participation and to reject the deeply discriminatory bills that only harm girls and women in sport.
