Veterans, lawmakers push for paid family and medical depart
AUGUSTA, Maine (WABI) – Legislators and veterans gathered today to discuss the need for paid family and sick leave.
Legislature is considering a bill to set up a commission to develop a paid family and sick leave program in Maine.
The state would have to transfer $ 200,000 from available funds to support the commission.
Those who spoke today say everyone should take time off after having a baby or for medical emergencies, especially veterans.
“Veterans and their families are a particularly vulnerable population with complex health problems and economic insecurity that can deteriorate without access to paid family vacations,” said Senator Mattie Daughtry.
“Nobody should have to choose between their family and their job. Over a hundred Maine veterans and their families came together to share support for a paid family and sick leave program, ”said the veteran Auta Main.
Senator Daughtry says once the commission starts working they could determine the cost of this initiative.
