‘Wingnut’ Madison Cawthorn Accused of ‘Anti-Catholic Bigotry’ After Criticizing Vatican Vaccination Coverage
US Representative Madison CawthornThe North Carolina Republican has been criticized for anti-Catholic bias – and ridiculed for ignorance – after attacking the Vatican over its new rule requiring all employees to be vaccinated against COVID-19 unless they have a medical apology.
“That doesn’t sound legal …” said Cawthorn, an avid tweeter, from his official Congress Twitter account in response to the news. “You shouldn’t be forced to get vaccinated against their will. The vaccination is there for those who want it and who need it due to medical weaknesses. “
Cawthorn, who contributed to the January 6 riot, has no medical degree, including immunology. Nor does he have a law degree or a degree in public health or politics, or in religious studies or religious administration.
However, he has a very active Twitter account. An NCRM investigation of his recent tweets shows that the vast majority were attacks on Democrats and the media. Some of them are announcements of laws that he co-finances. A small minority of his tweets are related to North Carolina or its constituents.
Cawthorn has recently met Dr. CNN’s Anthony Fauci, New York Governor’s Chris Cuomo, Andrew Cuomo, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, President Joe Biden, Democrats in general and green energy attacked. And that’s just his from his official Twitter account in Congress, not his campaign account.
As most of you know, the Vatican is an independent city-state that is not subject to the laws of the United States or any other country.
Many, including this Catholic priest, questioned his assessment:
Pssst …
The Vatican is not in California.
– or the United States.
– or part of the country
It is a sovereign nation.
…
I’m pretty sure you don’t want OUR civil laws in California to apply.
But your call. 😇

And other:
Sir, you know the Vatican is a sovereign city-state ruled by an absolute monarch? It’s not governed by American law, much less the winged cosplay law.

Please proceed with the Vatican Labor Law.

Hey man. I see where you’ve been confused – but just so you know, these are two different places. pic.twitter.com/zSUXSg6wld

God, you are such a fucking idiot. Nazi scum …
– Josh Summitt (@Josh_Summitt) February 19, 2021
(I know it’s hard to see anti-Catholic bigotry in the context of * gestures by and large * ALL OTHER BIGOTRY, but that’s an integral part of the WASP-y perspective too.)

Seriously, we are only a message away from American far-right anti-Catholic at any point in time, and things like Cawthorn, who ignorantly rail against internal health at the Vatican, are a toe in the water.

When did you become an expert in Vatican law? https://t.co/pOwmR3xTs3
– Bradley P. Moss (@BradMossEsq) February 19, 2021
1. The Vatican is an independent sovereign nation. US laws do not apply.
2. It’s legal in the US. Jacobson v. Massachusetts case, 1905.
Don’t have staff who can teach you “things” before you tweet? Just a thought.

Wait until you learn about their marriage laws. Hi Boy.

Anti-Catholic too? This Madison Cawthorn is old school KKK.
– Steely Done (@Ritalinhead) February 19, 2021
I have published an encyclical

Anti-Catholic bigotry…. My sectarian upbringing in the west of Scotland now makes me wonder if Cawthorn is a Masonic brother of the Orange Order.
How does he feel about Rangers vs. Celtic? Londonderry versus Derry?
Was the scream “no surrender”?

Mr. Cawthorn, it is truly disappointing to see you take this anti-Christian stance. Who are you as the American government to tell a private religion what it can do?
– Martin Cizmar (@martincizmar) February 19, 2021
I don’t know if to go with “this is not our country darling” or “oops, freedom of religion”.

Wholeheartedly agree, let’s discuss it with the Pope’s manager.

I’m sure Cawthorn believes in the “employment at will” doctrine, so he shouldn’t have a problem with an employer choosing to fire potentially troubling employees.
And why is he against the religious freedom of the Catholic Church, by the way?
– “Greg A” (@RhymesWithRight) February 19, 2021
A) The Vatican is not in your district.
B) It is subject to religious rule. Which is what you and conservatives want. pic.twitter.com/03VEmaVCg5

Let me be clear: Religious entities have the absolute right to prohibit employment on the basis of sexuality, gender identity, marital status and pro-choice views. However, you have absolutely no right to demand that employees participate in the life-saving end of a global pandemic.
– Bill (@billdahab) Feb 19, 2021
An honest and completely sincere question: you understand the concept of national sovereignty, don’t you? And that US law doesn’t rule the Vatican?
(And also that U.S. law allows employers to require their workers to be vaccinated.)
