Voting and Civil Rights Organizations to Host Voting Rights Act and Redistricting Webinar – WBIW

INDIANA – Tomorrow, June 17th, Common Cause Indiana, the Indiana State Conference NAACP, and the Indianapolis NAACP will host a virtual webinar on the Voting Rights Act and how colored communities are affected by state redistribution. A panel of voting rights experts will discuss how the redistribution can silence the votes of minority voters at the ballot box.

“Every Indiana voter deserves to have a vote in our democracy,” said Julia Vaughn, executive director of Common Cause Indiana. “When Indiana begins redistribution, it is important that we have a fully independent, non-partisan process that is free from racial discrimination and gives every voter an equal vote.”

The reallocation, the realignment of the congressional and legislative districts, takes place every ten years after the ten-year census. Each state has a legal responsibility to ensure that the new districts comply with the voting rights law. To date, the Indiana General Assembly has yet to publicly announce the agency responsible for redistribution, the process, the schedule, or the opportunity for public contributions.
