Rubio Slammed for Demanding ‘Work Requirement’ for Mother and father to Get Little one Poverty Test

Almost every morning, US Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) tweeted a Bible quote to show that he is a devout Christian, but his policies are often inconsistent with his beliefs.

Here’s what Senator Rubio tweeted Tuesday morning:

The Lord is near to the broken heart and saves those whose spirits are down

Psalms 34:19

– Marco Rubio (@marcorubio) February 23, 2021

Hours earlier, Monday night, the Florida Republican Senator, who is running for re-election next year, expressed displeasure with a Democratic proposal to tackle child poverty, an issue exacerbated by the pandemic. Democrats want to increase the child tax credit by $ 2,000 a year, and then use those funds to mail parents up to $ 300 monthly checks. It would be of great help to many Americans with children.

How many?

The Center for American Progress (CAP) reported last month that nearly 11 million children in the United States were living in poverty. That’s roughly one in seven children.

Senator Rubio says the Democratic proposal is “welfare,” a word that for some reason is poisonous among Republicans, even though it appears in the US Constitution. He also advocates the lie that Americans stricken with poverty are lazy and unwilling to work, a real slap in the face when you consider how his party’s policies and efforts made the coronavirus pandemic unpredictable.

Ignoring the pandemic and high unemployment rate, Rubio says the federal government shouldn’t send monthly checks to parents – much of which are already owned by parents through existing tax laws – unless a “work request” is attached.

Read this brief but devastating analysis from the CAP:

More than 4 in 10 children live in households that have difficulty covering basic costs, and between 7 and 11 million children live in households where costs cannot make them eat enough. When the pandemic forced schools to move to detached and virtual learning, it exacerbated the barriers to high quality education for low-income children4 and pushed their parents, especially mothers, to choose between care and employment. Without serious intervention, economic recovery will leave low-income and marginalized people – and their children – behind. Some calculations have already shown that the child poverty rate has risen dramatically since the outbreak of the coronavirus crisis.

Rubio slammed on social media:

“We shouldn’t be helping the neediest … now here are some Bible verses.” – Marco Rubio

WTF should that mean: “To be pro-family means to be pro-work”? Being family-friendly means ensuring that children in the world’s richest country are lacking in basic supplies, food, health care, clothing and education. The chance of success is based on a social safety net.

Unless the poorest can use tax credits like your already wealthy friends.

We live in a country where super-rich politicians give super-rich corporations trillions in welfare for corporations from OUR tax dollars, but should we feel guilty if we get our own crumbs under the table?

Fuck you Marco Rubio. https://t.co/o45IAnzR4o

Marco seems to have missed all of the Bible verses about caring for children. https://t.co/IoT99SPv7z

Hardscrabble rubs.

You left out the part about it being a pandemic, man. It’s not well-being, it’s basic humanity. Do you know how this Christian you are supposed to be a fan of?

– Joe Berkowitz (@JoeBerkowitz) February 23, 2021

Hey Marco, is your wife working?

No? Because you earn six-digit numbers per year for Shitpost and can support your family with a single income and still get 1%?

Then shut up.

Our Constitution literally commands “common defense to be ensured and the common good to be promoted” right next to each other.

Rubio advocates the $ 750 billion military budget but condemns a potential $ 267 billion welfare budget to eradicate child poverty.

Absurd hypocrisy. https://t.co/wjVEsNLViV

Child care is the most important job there is. Letting families suffer and forcing full-time workers on grocery stamps while your donors underpay them and make record profits is CORPORATE WELFARE – the real “welfare” we should be talking about.

You are not “family friendly”. https://t.co/0hHLsFeZKW

“Are there no prisons?” said the ghost, turning to him for the last time in its own words. “Are there no workhouses?”

With respect, if it is well-being to do to your fellow man what you would expect him to do; then welfare is a Christian duty. When we have hordes of Americans in desperate conditions, it becomes a public health threat. Other states are taking care of their citizens through these shutdowns pic.twitter.com/M9EJ9krNgo

You heard Marco! Stop paying these freeloading kids and let them work! I’ve had enough of these babies just lying around. Get a job, kids!
