Highlights of the story

  • The increases for teachers range from $ 422 to $ 792, depending on experience
  • The principal of the new school, Trey Duke, will also receive the six-month increase
  • Other workers receive $ 250 full-time and $ 100 part-time
  • Rutherford County Schools offer similar increases to their staff

All Murfreesboro City Schools employees will receive a one-time increase in their paychecks of six months in May, officials recently decided.

“It’s kind of ‘thank you!’ for everything they’ve done this year, “said Butch Campbell, chairman of the City School Board, on Friday.

The board agreed to use an increase in funding for the Basic Education Formula approved by the Tennessee General Assembly in January to allow for one-time, one-time increases of 2% for teachers and additional allowances for other employees from January 1 to June 30. The Rutherford County’s Board of Education made a similar decision on increases for all employees and bus companies.

The board members said this is a way to show appreciation to the staff as they have been involved in raising and caring for children and distance teachers while protecting everyone from the spread of COVID-19.

“They’ve definitely been scrutinized,” said Campbell.

The teacher increases the range between $ 422 and $ 792

Licensed teachers receive a 2% pay increase for half a year as part of their May 15 city check under the city map.

An entry level teacher with a bachelor’s degree from Murfreesboro City Schools now makes $ 42,170, so a one-time raise for half a year is nearly $ 422.

A teacher with a bachelor’s degree and five years of experience makes $ 48,061, which is a raise of nearly $ 481 for half a year.

A teacher with 25 years of experience and a PhD earns $ 79,202, so a 2% increase in half a year would be $ 792.

The principal of the new school, Trey Duke, will also receive a raise, Campbell said. Part of Duke’s raise is based on what he earned as a former Headmaster at Salem Elementary in January and February. The remainder of the increased pay is based on his $ 145,000 salary as a school principal, a role he will officially take on Monday.

The county gave Headmaster Bill Spurlock a one-time six-month increase based on his annual salary of $ 160,224, which would mean $ 1,602 more in compensation.

Classified employees are part of the plan

The borough’s other full-time employees, known as classified employees, will receive a flat $ 250 on their paychecks on either May 15 or May 19.

The part-time workers other than substitute teachers who work for a contractor will receive a flat fee of $ 100 added to their May 19 paycheck.

Any applicable taxes will be deducted from these one-time payments.

All employees who started working for the district on or before March 1 are eligible for the increases. You must also be actively employed on May 15th to be eligible. People with paid or unpaid FMLA (Family and Medical Leave Act) status, COVID leave, military leave, or employee compensation leave are actively employed.
