Letter to the editor: Mainers want paid family, medical depart
I am writing in support of Maine family and paid sick leave. As one of the 75 percent of Mainers advocating paid vacation, I know firsthand the value of this critical part of the social safety net and the impact that lack of access to paid vacation has on our communities.
I was fortunate enough to get half-paid vacation through my employer and to be able to have my family financially afford to take maternity leave after my babies were born. But one in four new mothers in the US returns to work in less than 11 days after giving birth. This affects their postpartum recovery, their ability to establish breastfeeding, and the essential bonding that takes place in the first few weeks after birth.
Whether you’re giving birth, caring for a sick or aging family member, or recovering from an injury, surgery, or other health condition, Mainers deserve the time to see these important moments without fear for their financial security. So we need to introduce paid family vacations in Maine.
I’ve heard people say that “Maine is a small town” – we have an opportunity to take care of each other; to ensure that our neighbors are provided with the resources they need to raise happy, healthy families here; and to guarantee all the joy and wonder Maine has to offer for generations to come.
