Phoenix az (December 17, 2020) – Attorney General Mark Brnovich announced today that the Arizona Attorney General (AGO), in partnership with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), has released a new civil rights brochure in English and Spanish to Arizona citizens available free of charge. The booklet provides Arizona residents with answers to frequently asked questions about their rights and civil rights complaints relating to discrimination in employment, housing, public housing and voting. Initially, the brochures will be distributed to 180 locations across Arizona nationwide, including the Arizona Bar Foundation, Community Legal Services, courts, legal libraries, and nonprofits.
“I am determined to defend the civil rights of Arizona people and I encourage people who are discriminated to contact our office immediately,” said Attorney General Brnovich. “The new brochure aims to provide simple and clear information to Arizonans about their right to live free from unlawful discrimination and what to do when they are victims.”
The Arizona Attorney General’s Civil Rights Division (Division) enforces the Arizona Civil Rights Act (ACRA), which prohibits discrimination in employment, housing, public housing, and voting. Part of the department’s mission is to raise public awareness of the ACRA. The brochure provides answers to frequently asked and important questions such as:
- Which protected classes does the ACRA cover?
- How long do I have to file a discrimination claim?
- What happens after i file a discrimination charge?
- Do I need to hire an attorney to file a charge with the department?
- What are examples of unlawful discrimination?
Since 2015, the department has investigated more than 1,700 complaints of ACRA violations each year. The department resolves disputes through investigation and various forms of conflict resolution, including mediation, arbitration, or litigation if necessary.
