Kojo For Youngsters: Civil Rights Icon Ruby Bridges
Kojo For Kids welcomes Ruby Bridges to the show on Monday, February 15th at 12:30 p.m. Listen live by streaming the show on this page or tune in to 88.5 FM in the Washington, DC area. Children can call 800-433-8850 with questions.
Ruby Bridges was born in 1954, the year the Supreme Court ruled against segregation in public schools. Six years later, she passed hostile white crowds and was accompanied by federal marshals. She was the first black child to enter William Frantz Elementary School in New Orleans.
Ruby Bridges, one of the youngest heroes of the civil rights era, talks to us about what it was like to be such an important part of history at such a young age and how she has advocated equality since then. And we will hear about her new children’s book “This Is Your Time”.
We also welcome the students at Alice Deal Middle School in Northwest DC, our school of the week. We know you will have questions for Ruby Bridges, but we answer your questions too – if you are a kid!
This show is part of the “Kojo For Kids” series, a segment of the Kojo Nnamdi Show, which introduces guests who are of particular interest to young listeners. Despite being on WAMU 88.5 for 23 years, Kojo had his first chance to reach an audience of children, most of whom were at school until recently during our live broadcast. We look forward to hearing from our youngest listeners! Join us!
