Illinois expands entry to family and medical depart for individuals who work in colleges | Information

Springfield Missouri

CHICAGO, IL – On Tuesday, Governor JB Pritzker signed Law HB 12, which extends access to family and sick leave for educational staff in school districts, public universities, and community colleges.

HB 12 enables school employees who have been employed for at least 12 months and who have worked 1,000 hours in the last 12 months to claim family and sick leave under the same conditions as the Federal Family and Sick Leave Act (FMLA) of 1993.

Previously, school staff had to work 1,250 hours to be eligible for this benefit. HB 12 benefits students who, due to limited opportunities to work outside of the school year, have generally not been able to meet the 1,250 hour requirement.

While family and sick leave are more known for caring for a newborn, adopted, or fostered child, FMLA can also be used when an employee needs time to recover from a serious state of health or to care for a family member with a serious state of health or health Caring for a family member who is injured while on active duty in the military.

“It is extremely important to ensure that all Illinois education professionals have what they need not only to support the students and families they serve, but also to support themselves and their own families,” said Governor JB Pritzker. “That’s why I’m proud to sign an extension to the Family and Medical Leave Act that will cover thousands of education professionals across the state.”
