Hispanic civil rights leaders converge for digital symposium

SAN ANTONIO – A pre-planned large symposium organized by the Mexican-American Civil Rights Institute now coincides with the problems facing Texas Latinos.

Sarah Zenaida Gould, interim director of the institute, said on Saturday at 3 p.m. that “a story of courage, bravery for change” will bridge the past with the present.

The reason for this, she said, is: “We understand that civil rights are still a work in progress. We are still working to create this more perfect union. “

For example, the authors of Civil Rights in Black and Brown will talk about “historic incidents of a multiracial struggle against police brutality in Texas.”

Gould said a panel will also discuss a 10-year project known as the Raza database, which will compile “police-related homicide numbers” involving Latinos.

San Antonio Congressman Joaquin Castro will be the keynote speaker on Saturday, followed by a series of panel discussions including one from emerging scholars in Mexican American civil rights history.

“I hope that this symposium might reinvigorate or reinvigorate some ideas,” said Gould, so that the audience can find a topic that is important to them.

She said she hoped they would say, “This is a topic that is important to me. I want to learn more and I want to do something. “
