The leading American civil rights activist urges Biden to release 60 million doses of AstraZeneca vaccine to India

A leading American civil rights activist has called on President Joe Biden to release 60 million AstraZeneca vaccine doses for India battling a devastating second wave of the coronavirus pandemic. The AstraZeneca vaccine has not been approved by the US and is unlikely to be used by the Biden government.

Biden recently said that he intended to move AstraZeneca vaccines to other countries. At a press conference in Chicago, American civil rights activist Rev Jesse Jackson said he would speak to Biden to immediately bring 60 million doses of AstraZeneca vaccines to India.

Mass vaccination is said to be the only cure for India’s current public health crisis, he said.

“They are people. If the wind blows and we don’t stop it today, it will spread all over the world,” he said.

Rev. Jackson expressed concern about the current situation in India and said he would speak personally to the health industry to donate oxygen concentrators and bottles to India and to contact the pharmaceutical companies to ensure therapeutic supplies to the country.

Other Indian Americans from the Chicago area made similar statements.

“It is everyone’s duty to help India reduce this COVID-19 surge as we live in a world that cannot be separated by borders,” said Dr. Vijay Prabhakar, chairman of the American Association of Multiethnic Physicians.

“Based on current projections, some models suggest that 1 million people will die by the end of August. As we know, this would be a tragic humanitarian crisis,” said Dr. Srinivas Reddy, the trustee of the Chicago Medical Society.
