Ex-Logan police officer charged with federal civil rights offense | Information
CHARLESTON – Federal law enforcement officers arrested a former Logan City police officer Thursday morning for violating civil rights against an arrested person.
The arrest came on Tuesday following indictments by a federal grand jury in Charleston. According to a US Department of Justice press release, the jury accused 44-year-old Everett Maynard of using excessive force against an arrested person while Maynard was a police officer with the Logan City Police Department.
In the indictment, Maynard is charged with a count of deprivation of rights based on the color of the law. The indictment alleges that Maynard used inappropriate force to inflict bodily harm on a detainee identified as “RW” on his release.
The indictment provides for a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.
Deputy Attorney General Pamela S. Karlan, Department of Civil Rights, Ministry of Justice; Acting US attorney Lisa G. Johnston for the southern district of West Virginia; Carlton Peeples of the FBI Pittsburgh Field Office announced this.
The case has been investigated by the Charleston Resident Agency of the FBI Pittsburgh Field Office with assistance from the West Virginia State Police and is being followed up by Trial Attorney Kathryn E. Gilbert of the Civil Rights Division and US Assistant Attorney Nowles Heinrich.
