Deon Taylor to direct John Lewis Civil Rights drama ‘Freedom Journey’ | Information
Deon Taylor (Fatale, Black & Blue) has come on board to lead the civil rights drama Freedom Ride and shares the efforts of late Congressman John Lewis and other activists to end segregation laws.
Hideaway Entertainment, INDE Companies, and the Hidden Empire Film Group have scheduled a summer production launch and plan to film in Atlanta, Georgia and Birmingham, Alabama.
Steven Vosburgh, Dusdi Fissette and Taylor wrote the 1961 screenplay of the Freedom Riders – a multiracial group of young activists led by Lewis who later became a Congressman and died last summer while busing them deep south and suffering Beatings by citizens and the police.
Their determination to remain nonviolent and refuse to step down eventually forced the government to disconnect all buses, trains, public spaces, and facilities used for international travel.
The script is based on first-person accounts from a dozen of the original Freedom Riders, including the late civil rights icon John Lewis.
Matt Rhodes (Cherry) from Hideaway Entertainment, Kim Leadford (The Butler) from INDE Companies, Mark R. Harris (Crash) and Roxanne Avent Taylor (Fatale) from Hidden Empire Film Group will produce.
Taylor and his partner in the Hidden Empire Film Group, Robert F. Smith, will serve as executive producers alongside civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump and his firm Brooklyn Media, as well as Charles Bonan and Daniel McCarney.
