Columnist Delivers Devastating Blow to ‘Joe Manchin’s Mighty Delusions’
A Washington Post columnist on Sunday night responded to the comment and TV tour by US Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV), announcing that he would not support HR1 / S1, the For the People Act, to do so Protect voting rights.
“Walter Mitty has become a man in the Senate: a man who believes himself to be the champion of a fantasy and who hopes but has no plan,” writes James Downie of The Post. “He believes he will save the country by recruiting ’10 good Republicans’, even if dreams don’t create so many Republicans who cast a fair vote.”
Some say that instead of supporting the For the People Act, it would support the passage of the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, which would restore the Voting Rights Act of 1965 across the country.
“And as for the impartial passage of the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, Manchin has no proposals. “It’s starting to be bipartisan,” he told CBS’s John Dickerson before listing exactly one Republican, Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski – far fewer than the 10 he (or anything else) would have to pass without a filibuster. When Dickerson asked why Republicans would vote for a law that would limit their state profits, Manchin replied, “If we can’t agree, God will help us, John.” God help us indeed. “
“I’m not naive,” insisted Manchin. “I will continue to work with my non-partisan friends and hopefully we can get more from them.” Here, too, he has hope, but no “how” – the epitome of naivety. Worse still was his assertion to CBS that “my Republican friends and colleagues see the impasse too. That is not something they want or want. “
This is past naivety or stupidity – it is pure delusion.
“In his eyes, he’s the hero of this story,” says Downie. “In truth, he’s the idiot. And the country pays the price for its delusions. “
