It lands on the last Monday in May. It began life as “Decoration Day” and began after the Civil War, a war with more than 600,000 soldiers causalities.

Twentieth century wars were later included, such as World War I and World War II, Korea, Vietnam, and the two wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. President Biden withdraws troops from Afghanistan after an extended US presence in the Middle East.

A racial justice activist and advocate took up Twitter Monday to claim the origins of Memorial Day were not what most people thought and nothing like what gone with the wind would lead you to believe.

“Let everyone know the truth: Newly liberated blacks in Charleston launched Memorial Day to honor black soldiers for their courage and tenacity after fighting on the front lines of the Civil War,” wrote Ben Crump on Twitter.

According to a Pulitzer Prize-winning author who studies the life of Frederick Douglass, a former slave, thinker, and alleged friend of Abraham Lincoln, the historian David. W Blight of Yale University, the origins of Memorial Day actually come from black veterans.

Blight spoke to History.com about his 1996 discovery of the role of Black Soldiers in creating the Federal Day.

“There was a file that said ‘First Decoration Day’ and inside it was a handwritten narration by an old veteran on a piece of cardboard and a date referring to an article in the New York Tribune. That narrative told the essence of the story I ended up telling in my book, of that march on the racetrack in 1865, ”he said.

On May 1, 1865, according to Blight newspaper archives, over 10,000 people, mostly freed slaves, held a parade around the circuit. This included school boys, members of Black Union battalions such as the 54th Massachusetts, and black religious figures. It is believed to be the earliest recorded memorial service.

The story goes on

Black history and the contribution of blacks to history have often been torn out of the national conversation. This includes the 1921 Tulsa Race massacre, which took place 100 years ago on Monday. It wasn’t until it penetrated popular culture through television shows like Watchmen ‘and Lovecraft County that people became aware of one of the most violent racist attacks in US history.

However, attempts have been made to correct this through a commemorative festival, and President Joe Biden declared May 31, 2021 “Remembrance Day” the previous Monday.

On May 19, the last survivors of the attack on Black Wall Street testified in front of Congress about the impact the horrific violence had on them.

“I will never forget the violence of the white mob when we left home. I still see black men being shot, black corpses lying on the street. I still smell smoke and see fire. I still watch black shops burn to hear planes fly over me. I hear the screams. I saw the massacre every day. Our country may forget this story, but I can’t, “said Viola Fletcher, who, at 107, is the oldest survivor still alive.

Hundreds gather at the prayer wall of the historic Tulsa Church

Black women’s next targets: governorships and senate seats

Religious leaders, artists honor George Floyd in concert

<div class= CivilDayIssuesLawyerMemorialOriginsreminderRights
