SHREVEPORT, La – An icon of the country’s civil rights movement returns to his hometown of Shreveport. David Dennis wants to inspire a new generation of grassroots activism just in time for Juniteenth, the celebration of the end of slavery in the USA
Dennis was a student leader and one of the organizers of the Freedom Riders in the 1960s.
He will attend a workshop on community activism on Friday, June 18 at 10:30 am at Little Union Baptist Church on Milam Street.
Then on Saturday, June 19th – the June thenth – he will also host A Conversation With David Dennis. It starts at 10:30 am at the Peaceful Rest Baptist Church on Saint Vincent Avenue.
Several local organizations planned the community meetings. Activist Hersy Jones says advancement for African Americans from the civil rights movement “was the result of the blood, sweat and tears of grassroots leaders like David Dennis.
“So we hope that Mr. Dennis will revive in our ward,” Jones continued. “That there won’t be an attitude that says what people haven’t done, but that there will be a look inside that says what I haven’t done and what I can do.”
The next weekend’s meetings are open to the public.
