The United States supports South Sudan’s quest to become a fully united, peaceful, just, and prosperous society based on respect for human rights and the rule of law. These ideals are enshrined in the transitional constitution and the revitalized peace agreement, which form the framework for the exercise of politics and governance while at the same time upholding the values of human dignity and equality.

The transitional constitution addresses the rights and obligations of all citizens of South Sudan, stating that “every citizen has the right to freedom of expression” and that “the right to peaceful assembly is recognized and guaranteed”.

For unity, peace, justice and prosperity to reign, the South Sudanese must exercise their constitutional rights, including freedom of expression and assembly, access to justice and a fair trial. The United States urges the South Sudanese, their government, and security services in particular, to commit themselves to politics and governance only through constitutional, free, fair, peaceful and credible democratic processes, while avoiding violence and acts outside the constitutional framework.
