Charlotte highschool formally renamed in honor of iconic civil rights lawyer – WSOC TV

CHARLOTTE – When some Charlotte students return to school this fall, their high school will have a new name, graduation gowns, gym uniforms, and t-shirts.

The school formerly known as Zebulon B. Vance High School was officially renamed Julius L. Chambers High School.

Chambers founded the first integrated law firm in Charlotte and most notably won the Schwan v Mecklenburg supreme court trial, which helped integrate schools.

Last year the CMS board unanimously decided to change the name of the school. Vance was controversial because he was a Confederate military captain and owned slaves during the Civil War.

>> In the video at the top of the page, Channel 9’s Gina Esposito talks to Chambers’ son about how he’s working with the school to bring his father’s legacy to the fore.
