On Wednesday, the Senate Judiciary Committee held a hearing of Cory Wilson, a Mississippi LGBTQ judge appointed by President Donald Trump for a lifetime appointment to the 5th Court of Appeals.

Pink News notes that Wilson strongly opposed same-sex marriage in 2012, calling it “a pander for liberal interest groups and an attempt to view Republicans as intolerant, loveless and even bigoted.”

Remember, the Republican Party has repeatedly promoted election campaigns, statewide bans, and national laws to keep same-sex marriage illegal. In fact, in 2016 the party’s national platform attempted to overturn the landmark 2015 US Supreme Court ruling to legalize same-sex sex

In 2016, Wilson also supported Mississippi House Bill 1523, a terrible anti-LGBTQ bill designed to prevent lawsuits against anyone discriminating against same-sex marriage, transgender identity, or premarital sex on the basis of “genuine religious beliefs or moral beliefs”. In short, the bill allows businesses and medical workers of all types to refuse service to LGBTQ people.

The bill was signed by Governor Phil Bryant on July 27, 2016. Although U.S. District Judge Carlton Reeves issued an injunction against the law in 2017, the U.S. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals overturned Reeves’ decision – the exact same court as Wilson wants to sit down.

Wilson also wants Roe v. Wade Repeal the 1973 US Supreme Court ruling legalizing access to abortion and the Affordable Care Act (also known as Obamacare). Wilson dodged questions about his desire to turn the ACA over during his Senate questioning.

And if that wasn’t bad enough, Slate has a rundown of Wilson’s very vocal disdain for Obama, Hillary Clinton, and the ACA:

Wilson called Barack Obama “King Barack”, “small and small”, “a fit-throwing teenager”, the “anointed one”, a “radical left” and “shrill, dishonest and intellectually bankrupt”. He accused Obama of running the “most paranoid and politicized White House since Nixon”. He has also called Hillary Clinton “Crooked Hillary”, “criminal and clueless” and either “crime stupid or intentionally ignorant”. And he falsely accused her of destroying documents under subpoena.

Then there is Wilson’s disgust for the ACA. He has described the law as “illegitimate”, “perverse” and “big intrusive government”, which is less about health care than about the redistribution of wealth and power.

He has also campaigned for his state’s voter ID laws and the mass purging of electoral rolls, claiming repeatedly (and falsely) that election fraud is a serious problem in Mississippi, writes Slate. In short, he’s exactly the kind of ideologue Trump would like to install in the increasingly right-wing U.S. Court of Appeals.

Wilson will likely get an endorsement thanks to Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.
