Tennessee Man Charged with Civil Rights Violations for Sequence of Church Arsons | OPA
A Tennessee man was charged with human rights abuses yesterday for his involvement in setting fire to four churches in the Nashville area.
Alan Douglas Fox, 28, of Nashville, was charged by criminal intelligence on setting fire to the Crievewood United Methodist Church on June 17, 2019; the Crievewood Baptist Church on June 25, 2019; the Catholic Church of Saint Ignatius of Antioch on June 25, 2019; and Priest Lake Community Baptist Church on June 26, 2019. Fox is also charged with carrying and using a gun during the arson of Crievewood Baptist Church.
According to the information, Fox intentionally started the fires because of the religious nature of the churches.
If convicted, Fox faces up to 20 years in prison for each fire and a five-year straight sentence for violating firearms.
This was announced by Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke of the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Department and incumbent US attorney Mary Jane Stewart for the Tennessee Middle District.
This case has been investigated by the FBI, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department, and the Nashville Fire Department. U.S. Assistant Attorney Sara Beth Myers and Trial Attorney Kyle Boynton of the Civil Rights Division are pursuing the case.
The charges are simply accusations and the accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
