June 12: Civil rights activist Medgar Evers was shot dead in his Jackson, Mississippi driveway in 1963

Medgar Evers: Medgar Evers was born on July 2, 1925 and was known as a civil rights activist and Secretary of State for the NAACP in Mississippi. Much of Evers’ work has been to desegregate the state in public places and at the state university. He also campaigned for equal rights for black citizens, including the right to vote. He became active in the 1950s and advocated his cause until he was murdered on June 12, 1963. After his death, he was remembered by numerous black personalities and his wife continued the fight for the rights of black Americans.
