NSW considers employees’ compensation for meals supply riders

The New South Wales government has announced a consultation to look at how workers compensation and CTP systems serve drivers in the delivery of food for services like Uber Eats and Deliveroo.

The Advice on accident insurance is managed by the state insurance regulator and is looking for “fit-for-purpose gig platform solutions” to ensure grocery delivery drivers have access to assistance should this be the case injured at work.

NSW M.Victor Dominello, Inister for Customer Service, said the consultation was the first of its kind in Australia.

“The grocery shipping sector is growing all the time and we need to find a modern and tailored solution to the problems this sector is facing,” said Mr. Dominello said.

“We need to consider the benefits of improving accident insurance for the people in our community who provide groceries to earn an income.”

Between the private insurance agreements, the existing employee compensation system and the CTP system, there is a risk that this group of workers will not be protected, Dominello added.

Some of the changes to food delivery driver compensation proposed to the government include increased awareness of existing safeguards; Request that platforms offer personal injury insurance to their drivers when delivering food; and establishment of a new personal injury insurance safety net system for grocery delivery drivers.

The idea of developing a traffic accident benefits (CTP) system for personal injury insurance for food delivery drivers was also initiated and the law was changed to extend the existing system to this group of workers.

Submissions will be accepted until May 28, 2021.
