YONKERS, NY – April 17, 2021 – Yonkers City Council earlier this week decided to accept a $ 175,000 settlement in the case of Ihsan Malkawi for damage suffered while in custody by the Yonkers Police Department.

In 2019, Ms. Malkawi had her hijab forcibly removed from her person. A hijab is a religious veil worn by Muslim women in the presence of a man outside their immediate family and usually covers the hair, head, and chest of their head in violation of their religious rights as defined in the U.S. Constitution and are protected.

YPD brought Ms. Malkawi for questioning regarding allegations

of abuse by her daughter. Ms. Malkawi was refused permission to wear the hijab while she was detained by the Yonkers Police Department for about 36 hours

Her daughter’s abuse claims were found to be false and were eventually withdrawn.

It is not known whether or not Ms. Malkawai was allowed to appear in court wearing a hijab.

The Yonkers City Council unanimously approved the settlement in favor of Ms. Malkawi.
