Throughout August, social justice and women’s rights organizations – organized by Paid Leave For All, a group advocating sustainable paid vacation policies – come together on a national bus tour of 14 states to raise awareness of the need of paid family and sick leave for everyone.

The United States is the only developed country without a national form of paid vacation. Still, 84 percent of U.S. voters, including 96 percent of Democrats, 81 percent of Independents, 74 percent of Republicans and 74 percent of Trump voters, have bipartisan support for paid vacation, according to a recent poll by Paid Leave For All Action .

Paid vacation is also widely supported by lawmakers including President Joe Biden and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-California. As such, the provision plays a large role in the Democrats’ $ 3.5 trillion “human” infrastructure package, which includes universal pre-customer and child tax credit enhancements, a free community college, and enhanced home care for the disabled and the elderly , Reducing the threats of climate change, lowering childcare, health care and prescription drug costs, and lowering taxes for middle and working class families.

On August 4th, Pelosi took the bus tour during her DC stop. In a speech she recalled her own advocacy of paid family and sick leave during a bus trip in 2014 with MP Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.).

“When we were taking a bus ride… a woman came forward to speak. She was a school bus driver. And she said, ‘Let me tell you what I see every school day. I see mothers come to the curb with their child, often crying, children sniffing. She has to put the child on the bus sick because she has no alternative, ‘”said Pelosi. “No paid family and sick leave, no adequate wages for childcare, no childcare. Everything we talk about concerns the woman who puts a sick child on the bus and what that means for the child and the other children. ”

The Paid Vacation for All bus tour is designed to raise public awareness of the need for a national paid vacation policy. In this way, proponents hope that local lawmakers and the public can help put pressure on the government to introduce paid vacation rules in the next infrastructure package.

“My friends, this is about family,” said Pelosi. “It’s about children. It’s time. It is time we did all of this. “
