VALLEY CITY, ND (INFORUM) – A Valley City man wants to break a longstanding North Dakota attitude that residents do not have the right to speak at public gatherings. He claims his elected officials wrongly refused to allow him and others to raise critical and possibly criminal issues at public gatherings.

Robert Drake filed a civil rights complaint in federal court on Friday, December 11, against North Dakota Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem and the Valley City Commissioners. He wants a federal judge to tell residents to speak to leaders without permission at public gatherings in North Dakota. This would reverse Stenehjem’s view that speaking in public (commission or council meetings) is a privilege, not a right.

Valley City attorney Carl Martineck told NewsDakota.com, “We have received the complaint from Mr. Drake and will review the validity of the legal and factual allegations and weigh our options in response.”
