Nashville, TN (WorkersCompensation.com) – The Tennessee Bureau of Workers’ Compensation (BWC) will be launching a free online training program starting July to help employers develop or improve the skills and knowledge to an employee’s return home to coordinate in the workplace after a work assignment. related injury. The REWARD program covers six different aspects of return to work that benefit both employers and their employees.

The training is part of the BWC’s newly developed Returning Employees to Work And Reducing Disabilities (REWARD) program. The initiative helps interested employers to develop and adapt a return program for their company. A REWARD program can be beneficial for both large and small employers.

An employer can have a person or a team approach lead a REWARD program. The course teaches safety managers, human resources professionals, risk managers or others to find changed job opportunities and to encourage injured workers in their recovery.

“Helping injured employees find meaningful work again is a goal that benefits everyone,” said Abbie Hudgens, BWC administrator. “The return to work coordinator training provides employers with valuable skills and tools to make REWARD a reality for employers and their employees.”

The BWC training program uses expertise from vocational rehabilitation, case management, physiotherapy, employers, medical providers, lawyers and the state government to provide a comprehensive training experience.

The curriculum was developed with input from industry experts and workers’ compensation case managers from across the state. Starting July 15, 2021, the free virtual program includes 90-minute classes every other week from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Central Time. The six courses are:

· July 15 – Workers’ Compensation 101. Learn about the rights of employers and workers in workers’ compensation, the value of advocating return to work, and the role of the office in workers’ compensation. This course is taught by BWC staff.

· July 29th – The role of a return to work coordinator. Join professional experts and / or case managers as they identify the key roles and responsibilities of a return to work coordinator. These seasoned professionals will describe the best practices and activities that they have seen over the course of their careers.

Join a licensed physician and employee compensation expert as they discuss tips, techniques, and best practices to get the most out of your physician relationships.

Join lawyers experienced in labor law like the FMLA and ADA as they discuss how these laws interact with employee compensation and return to work.

A return to work plan can reduce the cost of an accident at work, which can run into tens of thousands of dollars for a Tennessee company.

According to a 2018 study by the National Council on Compensation Insurance, the direct cost to employers of employee injury averages $ 41,000 per incident. Indirect costs such as overtime, training temporary or replacement workers and productivity losses are often higher than the direct costs.

Employers interested in getting back to work can enroll their employees for BWC’s REWARD training by emailing Marion White at [email protected] or calling (615) 253-1204.
