Texas Housers File Civil Rights Grievance in opposition to GLO
The Texas Housers and Northeast Action Collective have filed a civil rights complaint against the General Land Office over allegations that the agency intentionally acted in a discriminatory manner by denying federal funding to aid the recovery of black and Hispanic communities after Hurricane Harvey.
Such funds, known as Community Development Block Grant-Mitigation (CDBG-MIT), are designed to build community resilience and reduce risks such as human and property damage in the event of a disaster.
Federal funds are legally required to be distributed fairly and to follow fair living guidelines, however the Texas Housers claim the GLO did not obey the law.
According to the Texas Housers, the GLO used a flawed needs assessment and allocation process that was deliberately discriminatory based on race and national origin that favored white communities while systematically and deliberately denied African-American and Hispanic individuals and low- and middle-income communities. equal access to federal funds.
Originally scheduled for June 14, the virtual press conference will now take place on June 25, at which the Texas Housers will announce the filing of a Title VI complaint with the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
