A high school soccer team captain assigned to play the college ball and a high school basketball player are two of the three people who were shot dead in a shooting in Austin, Texas on Sunday. Austin was one of five big shoots that weekend. Columbus, Ohio, LaPlace and Shreveport, Louisiana, and Kenosha, Wisconsin, had mass shootings over the weekend after a horrific mass shooting at a FedEx warehouse in Indianapolis, Indiana, which left eight dead and seven wounded.

In Austin, the suspect is “a retired Travis County Sheriff’s Office detective charged with sexually assaulting a child,” reports CNN.

Five mourners, including a 12-year-old child, were shot dead during a vigil in Columbus, Ohio, commemorating the murder of a man a year earlier. A woman driving past the scene was shot in the head. She died.

Also on Sunday, a gunman from Kenosha, Wisconsin, killed three people and injured three others. A “person of interest” was arrested and charged with first degree first degree murder.

Six people, all children, were shot dead at a 12-year-old’s birthday party on Saturday night in LaPlace, Louisiana. None of the injuries were fatal. The alleged shooter was also a child. And in Shreveport, Louisiana, five people were shot dead and hospitalized late Sunday.

The Gun Violence Archive doesn’t even count the Austin, Texas murders as a “mass shooting,” as it only includes events in which at least four people were shot. It also doesn’t list the Ft. Worth, Texas 3-year-old who shot himself to death in a local park Sunday afternoon or the fatal shooting of an 11-year-old boy by a 9-year-old boy in a Dallas Walmart parking lot this past weekend.

The five major shootings this weekend are part of the gun violence over the weekend. An average of 316 people are shot each day, including 106 who are shot.

Sunday was the 108th day of the year. The armed violence archive lists 152 mass shootings up to Sunday.

On social media, Americans are angry at the gun violence explosion just as some feel that the coronavirus pandemic is slowly approaching the appearance of being controlled as more and more people are being vaccinated. (There were an additional 43,181 new cases on Sunday, a dramatic decrease from the 81,600 on Friday and the 63,627 on Saturday.)

Others point out that the Texas House passed laws this week ending the gun license requirement and allowing unlicensed open or concealed carry to be legal.
