Slain civil rights chief Medgar Evers to be remembered

The slain civil rights activist Medgar Evers is commemorated on Saturday at his home in West Jackson. A memorial ceremony and wreath-laying ceremony will take place on Saturday morning at Evers House on Margaret Walker Alexander Drive. A wreath-laying ceremony will also take place in the Medgar Evers Library on Medgar Evers Blvd. “Again, it is about trying to keep the dream alive that Mayor Charles Evers started many, many years ago,” said Kenneth Stokes, councilor of Jackson Ward 3rd, will not be there. Charles Evers died in July 2020 at the age of 97. Medgar Evers was the Mississippi Secretary of State for the NAACP when he was killed by Byron De La Beckwith at the height of the civil rights movement in June 1963 at his home to the west of Jackson.

“Again, it’s about trying to keep the dream alive that Mayor Charles Evers started many, many years ago,” said Kenneth Stokes, Jackson Ward 3 alderman.

This will be the first year that Medgar Evers’ brother, the former mayor of Fayette, Charles Evers, will not be present. Charles Evers died in July 2020 at the age of 97.
