Searsport Elementary college students begin Civil Rights Staff to advertise inclusion
SEARSPORT, Maine (WABI) – A group of Searsport Elementary students lead by example to help others feel welcome at school.
“This is the civil rights team and we try to make people feel welcome at this school,” said Keenan Hamel, head of the civil rights team.
“I feel like there are students at our school who may not be showing the real me, and I want them to feel like they can while they’re here,” said Courtney Eastman, school counselor.
Her latest project was a mural that shared kind words to welcome everyone who comes through these doors.
“So when you come in, you can see it and know that you are welcome at this school and that you are being treated fairly,” said Gabrielle Dugas, civil rights team leader.
These students leave a legacy with great hopes for what future students can achieve.
“It will be fun to come back and see it and see the difference it has made at this school,” said Maddie Gundel, civil rights team leader.
On Wednesday, the parents got a first glimpse of their hard work.
“It’s a great opportunity. I’m glad they start so young. Often times you don’t see clubs like this until high school. I think it’s too late, ”said Elizabeth Austin, Parent of Civil Rights Team Leader.
“It felt good to know that we will leave something behind so that everyone feels welcome,” said Grundel.
