US Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI) appeared on Fox News’ “Hannity” Thursday night, suggesting that President Joe Biden was compromised by Russia.
Host Sean Hannity drafted a scenario and attacked Biden for choosing not to sanction a Russian oil pipeline. “Maybe Joe thinks that Russia has compromised him?” He told the audience, although there was no evidence to support this claim.
“Well, you wouldn’t be wrong if you were suspicious that maybe that’s the problem,” replied Senator Johnson.
Many on social media reacted outraged, noting that Johnson’s nickname became “Russian Ron” when he flew to Russia in 2018 and spent July 4th in Moscow. After this trip, many say his behavior changed.
In March, the New York Times described Johnson as “an all-access provider of misinformation on serious issues such as the pandemic and the legitimacy of American democracy” and “the Republican Party’s main reinforcer on conspiracy theories and disinformation.”
It also called him “the leading Republican proponent of a revisionist effort to deny the motives and violence of the mob that broke through the Capitol”.
Johnson’s “drumbeat of distortion, false theories, and lies reminds some Wisconsin Republicans of a person from the state’s past who rarely gets in the way of facts: Senator Joseph McCarthy,” the Times indicted.
Many are angry and say that Trump-defending Johnson himself seems to have ties to Russia, as does the former president whom he was so passionate about protecting at all costs and by all means.
