Premiere Screening of “We Insist!” hyperlinks historic civil rights second to as we speak

“Our goal is to educate and share all aspects of music, including its role in the fight for equality,” he says Lonnie Davis, President of JazzArts Charlotte. “We Insist! Is a masterly piece of work that captures the movement and contains many references to the challenges of today. The mural of the Black Lives Matter of our city was an obvious location for this significant 60th anniversary tribute.”

Legendary drummer and composer Max Roach is considered one of the most important jazz figures in history. His 1960 suite “We Insist!” carries powerful messages in support of civil rights and racial justice.

Internationally recognized trumpeter Sean Jones joins accomplished local musicians to create this premiere of Carolinas. Jones is a performer, composer, and jazz educator. He was lead trumpeter for jazz in the Lincoln Center Orchestra and is currently president of the Jazz Education Network. In addition to the extraordinary number of musicians, the multidisciplinary performance includes African-inspired choreography and spoken word.

“”North Carolina is the birthplace of several prominent jazz figures, including Max Roach. Like many artists in the 1960s, jazz musicians guided the turbulence of the era into their art, “said Dr. Willie Griffin, Historian at the Levine Museum of the New South. “In many ways, Max Roachs “We insist!” The Freedom Suite was the keynote of jazz albums in the 1960s, as it and the ensuing music by prominent jazz artists inspired many of the young civil rights activists of the time. ”

This program was made possible with support from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the Levine Museum of the New South, Charlotte Center City Partners, and the US Bank. “This piece is just as inspiring today as it was 60 years ago and reflects our strong commitment as a company to promoting social justice,” he said See Dominski, Chief Social Responsibility Officer at US Bank.
