Plan for paid family medical depart strikes ahead in Maine
AUGUSTA – A proposal to set up a commission to develop a policy for paid medical family leave in Maine moved closer to reality on Thursday.
The Maine Senate voted in favor of the proposal.
The Commission will be tasked with studying the best way to implement sickness benefit policy.
Democratic Senator Mattie Daughtry made the proposal, which passed with a count of 23-11 with some support from both parties. Daughtry said the proposal addressed the fact that many workers “have to choose between financial security and personal and family well-being”.
The commission would eventually propose a paid family and sick leave program for the state. Daughtry said the panel would “hear from workers, employers, carers and experts” and “propose a system to support all workers, families and employers in Maine.”
