Organizers plan rally for civil rights

As civil rights activists prepare for the 58th annual March on Washington, Oklahoma organizers are planning a separate march and rally for Saturday, August 28th.

In DC and several other major cities, civil rights activists honor the spirit of the original March on Washington when Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. gave his famous “I Have a Dream” speech. The events will focus on getting Congress to pass stronger electoral protection and fighting the election restriction laws that have surfaced in states across the country.

Marches planned across the country to expand voting rights
Regarding Republicans refusing to pass the For the People Act, Martin Luther King III, the late Dr. King Jr. told CNN in June that it was “a sad state of affairs”.

“Those 50 Republican Senators decided it wasn’t even worth discussing, and that’s pretty sad,” said King III.
If passed that For the People’s Law would strengthen democracy by enabling automatic same-day voter registration. It would expand access through postal voting and early voting.

In addition, the law would limit states’ ability to remove voters from the lists, and it would increase electoral security following attacks by Trump supporters who continue to spread “the big lie” that Donald Trump won the 2020 election. Several state and Supreme Court cases have confirmed that President Joe Biden won the election.
Oklahoma March, rally planned for civil and voting rights
For Oklahoma part, based in Oklahoma City The black times Journalist Tyreke Baker and other organizers will lead a march from OKC’s historic Black Eastside neighborhood, which will begin on Saturday, April 28th.
The event comes after dozens of states put voting restrictive measures in place and the notorious Oklahoma County detention center is under public scrutiny due to increasing deaths in custody. In 2021 alone, at least eight inmates were reported to have died in prison by August 10 Oklahoma City Free Press.
“We will march peacefully as a united community to honor the work of our ancestors in the civil rights movement,” The Black Times wrote in one Article about the route of the march.
March starts on the Eastside
Attendees begin with an opening ceremony on Saturday lunchtime on North Martin Luther King Ave. near NE 23rd St. Next, the protesters will walk to the State Capitol building at around 12:50 pm will address the crowd on the Capitol grounds while the organizers hold a community engagement mass.
Some of the topics the speakers will highlight include:
- Coordination strategies & engagement
- The legacy and advancements of the civil rights movement,
- Indigenous problems in Oklahoma,
- LGBTQ + visibility,
- Mental health awareness
- Reform of criminal law and the public prosecutor’s office.
In addition, the community engagement fair will give community members the opportunity to register to vote and file complaints against the Oklahoma County Detention Center.

“We have permits to use the streets together with the use of the Capitol grounds. Water and snacks will be provided for participants, and transportation will also be provided for our senior and disabled community to ensure they have the opportunity to take part in the march. “
