Ohio Civil Rights tour visits mural they gifted to Selma, hears story of the Selma Trainer’s March for voting rights | Information

When you turn off Broad Street into the parking lot next to the Selma Welcome Center, you will see a mural commemorating important people and events of the civil rights movement in Selma.

The mural was created by a local artist, but it is a gift from an educational program in Youngstown, Ohio that comes here every year as part of a trip to see significant sites of the civil rights movement.

Mahoning Valley Sojourn to the Past Director Penny Wells said the program is “a life changing and empowering academic immersion program that also teaches leadership skills. We’re taking middle school students, 11th and 12th grade students, and college students on a journey through the south on the civil rights movement’s path. “
