No reference to political, civil rights

Letters to the Newsday editorial team before 7 p.m.

THE EDITOR: In everything I have read and heard so far in our current debate about whether people should or must take a Covid19 vaccine, I have seen no reference to our international obligations. In December 1966, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which came into force in March 1976. TT joined the pact in December 1978.

Article 12 of the agreement reads as follows:

“1. Everyone who is lawfully resident in the territory of a state has the right to freedom of movement and choice of residence within that territory.

“2. Everyone is free to leave any country, including their own.

“3. The above rights are not subject to any restrictions other than those provided by law, which are and are necessary for the protection of national security, public order, public health or morality or the rights and freedoms of others in accordance with the other rights recognized in this Agreement.

“4. Nobody may be arbitrarily deprived of the right to enter their own country. “

To what extent is the above taken into account?
