New Proper-Wing ‘Election Integrity’ Challenge Chair Is Lawyer Who Was A part of Trump’s Name to Brad Raffensperger
A new right-wing “electoral integrity” project is being led by Cleta Mitchell, an attorney who participated in the infamous appeal in which former President Donald Trump threatened and harassed Georgia Republican Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to get enough votes “Find” to reverse them. Choice leads to this state. The new “multi-million dollar initiative to protect national elections” was announced by the right-wing artificial turf group FreedomWorks via an “exclusive” offer to Newsmax.
“Election integrity is the number one issue for the conservative movement,” FreedomWorks said in a statement to Newsmax. “The outcome of the 2020 presidential election and the associated litigation underscore the need for conservatives at all levels to fight for safe elections that instill confidence.”
As the Washington Post reported in January, Mitchell was an “early supporter” of Trump’s false claims about election fraud and stolen elections. Shortly after the election for Biden was scheduled, Mitchell claimed Georgia’s recount was a “total scam” and tweeted, “I’m glad to be seen as a crazy job for believing in the rule of law.”
On the Raffensperger call, Mitchell said Trump’s legal team had “formally and informally” been in contact with Georgia election officials for “weeks”. State election officials repeatedly told Trump, Mitchell and then White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows that their claims were based on false information.
In January, Right Wing Watch reported that Mitchell signed a December 30 letter from right wing leaders urging Senate Republicans to “protect the Republic” by casting votes from battlefield states won by Biden.
To kick off her new venture, Mitchell appeared on Sunday’s Newsmax program “Save the Nation,” hosted by FreedomWorks President Adam Brandon, claiming that the 2020 elections resulted in Americans having confidence in the Would have lost the nation’s elections and resulted in a totalitarian government (see video below).
Mitchell opposed longstanding progressive efforts to protect voters from voter repression, claiming they were ploys to “wipe out” election guarantees. Mitchell called HR 1, a suffrage and democracy reform bill that was passed in the House of Representatives and is now being scrutinized in the Senate, an attempt to “rig” elections in favor of the Democrats. Mitchell called on right-wing activists to “hammer” their senators to defy the legislation.
In addition to targeting federal voting legislation, FreedomWorks ‘efforts appear to target the same battlefield states identified in the right-wing leaders’ December 30 letter: Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. FreedomWorks’ list also includes North Carolina.
Before Mitchell volunteered for Trump’s post-election efforts, she represented the “who’s who of prominent Trumpworld people,” the Daily Beast reported in January. Mitchell’s clients included Trumpism strategist Steve Bannon and right-wing True the Vote, an organization proven to crack down on mail-in ballots, question voter registrations, and advocate for voter identification laws. Mitchell was reportedly involved in a project to “protect” Trump and attack Democrats that right-wing activist Ginni Thomas presented to the Privy Councilor for National Politics in 2019. Mitchell resigned after being accepted as a partner in the law firm Foley & Lardner The call to Raffesnperger went public.
