Most federal employees will observe Friday as a public holiday, as June 19 falls on Saturday.
WMC spoke to the National Civil Rights Museum about this important landmark.
Dr. Noelle Trent said while recognizing the importance of juneteenth there are other memorial days that have been celebrated for generations.
“People not only found their freedom and gained their freedom, but celebrated their freedom on their own terms,” Trent said. “So it’s great that the US government went online with this celebration, but I think it’s important to note that this starts with blacks and we have Emancipation Days related to these key legislative moments.”
