Nashville Group Says Operating the Byhalia Pipeline By way of Memphis Violates Civil Rights Act – Nashville-Davidson, Tennessee
The Virginia-based Southern Environmental Law Center complains to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), claiming that routing the proposed Baiharia Pipeline through Memphis violates the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
According to Baharia, that site is a crude oil pipeline that runs approximately 49 miles from Memphis to Marshall County, Mississippi. According to the website, the pipeline connects the Diamond Pipeline and the Capline Pipeline. The Diamond Pipeline supplies the Valero Memphis refinery with crude oil for the production of gasoline and jet fuel. The Capline Pipeline now runs between central Illinois and the Gulf Coast of the United States.
Southern Environmental Law Center staff announced Friday that they had filed an administrative complaint with the EPA under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. This is on behalf of the group they have identified as the Memphis Community Against Pollution.
Complaints The Tennessee Department of Environmental Conservation (TDEC) claims it violated Title VI by making a permitting decision that disproportionately affects the black community in southwest Memphis. In particular, the permit already covers the health and financial burdens of oil refineries, decommissioned coal-fired power plants, active shot gas power plants, sewage treatment plants and many other industries for drinking water sources. A plant that enables the construction of crude oil pipelines by the owed black community, ”says a press release.
“Complaints also pass a policy stating that TDEC may or may not consider the impact of the decision to allow water quality on environmental justice, including whether it will place a disproportionate burden on the community because of their race. Claims to continually and continuously violate Title VI. “
Former Vice President Al Gore spoke about the Baharia Pipeline. Earlier this year he said, “Building more fossil fuel pipelines is ruthless and many of the proposed routes are racist.” However, Gore did not explain how racist the proposed route was.
Meanwhile, the team behind the Biharia pipeline said security on the site was of the utmost importance.
“We are trying to involve community leaders and experts in this project and its safety, from environmentalists and scientists to city and county officials, in the construction and operation of the pipeline. Meet or exceed regional, regional, and federal safety standards. According to the Biharia Pipeline website, we train our employees and work with local emergency teams to potentially. We will react quickly and safely to certain incidents. Frequently asked questions page.
“Before construction begins, the Baharia Connection Pipeline team considers several factors including potential protected species, key environmental features such as wetlands and waterways, schools, recreational facilities, and historical and cultural sites. We will work with engineers, environmental scientists, community leaders, and regulatory agencies to weigh these various factors and choose the best route before installing a single pipe on the ground. “
