Mitch McConnell Installs Tremendous-Transphobic and Inexperienced Decide on 15-12 months Bench
With President Donald Trump getting the boot on Jan. 20, Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is rushing through as many Trump appointments as possible.
This includes Stephen Schwartz, a 36-year-old who just received a 15-year appointment to the Court of Federal Claims, a court that hears cases of individuals suing the federal government for institutional abuse and failure. Schwartz’s story of transphobia in the courtroom is particularly troubling, as is the fact that he never argued a single case in the court in which he now sits.
Schwartz was defending the Gloucester County School Board in Virginia when they tried to prevent trans boy Gavin Grimm from using the school baths that match his gender identity.
“[Schwartz] also defended North Carolina’s Anti-LGBTQ House Act 2, which prohibited North Carolina cities from enacting anti-discrimination laws and banning transsexuals from using proper bathrooms in government buildings, including public schools, colleges and universities, ”Wonkette writes.
Schwartz also defended an electoral repression bill in North Carolina that the Fourth Circle Court named a “target.”[ed] African Americans with almost surgical precision ”and once argued that social security should be abolished because economic inequality“ is a natural aspect of the human condition ”.
McConnell’s rush for judicial appointments during a period of lame is unprecedented, but his last chance to bank long-term conservatives before he begins to stifle the appointments of Democratic President-elect Joe Biden.
