Letter to the editor: Uphold trans girls’s civil rights – defeat L.D. 926

I am the proud mother of a transgender child and a representative of the PFLAG Portland Board. Individually and as an organization, we speak out against LD 926, a discriminatory bill that bans transgender women and girls in Maine from participating in both interscholastic and intramural sports.

Denying transgender women and girls the opportunity to exercise is a violation of their rights and of Maine non-discrimination law. Supporters cry out for what is “fair”. What’s fair about ruling out the benefits of team participation for any of Maine’s teens, depending on who they are? What’s fair about the possibility of intrusive screening on girls to prove their gender? And how do you weigh the disadvantage for transgender girls versus the gain for cisgender girls?

Please ask your legislator to oppose LD 926. Tell him that Mainers don’t want to be part of the nationwide movement against the transgender community.

These girls are your daughters and granddaughters, your students, your caretakers. They have the same right to be fully who they are and to partake of what life has to offer as any other person.
