LA County Breaking Information: Reform LA Jails Releases Assertion In Response to AG Civil Rights Investigation In opposition to LA Sheriff Villanueva
After years of community advocacy through the LA County Sheriff’s Department exposing civil rights violations, the California Attorney General opened a civil rights investigation into “serious concerns” that “legitimate police practices have expired.” and to see if the LA County Sheriff is “violating the law or the rights of the people of Los Angeles County.”
This came just a day after Sheriff Villanueva reported to the Civilian Oversight Commission under threat of a subpoena stating that he continued to fail to provide Angelenos with transparency and accountability regarding the COVID-19 pandemic. He once said that his response in the prisons was “nothing short of a miracle”. From violating mask mandates to engaging in unsolved shootings, deputy sheriff gangs remain widespread in our community.
Mariela Alburgues, Director of Implementation at Reform LA Jails, made the following statement in response:
“We welcome the civil rights investigation launched by the Attorney General. It’s long overdue, but welcome given the rogue antics this sheriff led during his tenure. We continue to call for Sheriff Villanueva’s resignation for the benefit and safety of our communities. We cannot stand idly by while Sheriff Villanueva surpasses his authority and fails to hold his own MPs accountable for breaking the law. “
Reform LA Jails is a coalition of citizens, community leaders, businesses and organizations working to permanently reduce the population of people cycling in and out of prison. That starts with realizing how mental health, drug addiction, or chronic homelessness are exacerbated by incarceration. With COVID-19 weighing on our county jails and putting the lives of thousands of Angelenos at risk, it is more important than ever that we demand care, not cages.
