Kristen Clarke to Head DOJ’s Civil Rights Division – Our Time Press
AG James celebrates confirmation
NEW YORK – New York Attorney General Letitia James today celebrated Kristen Clarke’s confirmation to head the Department of Civil Rights at the US Department of Justice (DOJ). Clarke becomes the first black woman nominated and confirmed to lead the division. Early in her career, Clarke headed the Civil Rights Bureau in the New York Attorney General’s office.
“Kristen Clarke is a true civil servant who has devoted her career to improving the lives of others. This selfless work will continue after today’s two-party vote to confirm her nomination,” said Attorney General James. “Kristen is a first generation American who broke barriers all her life and again today, and I am confident that she will refocus the DOJ’s Civil Rights Department on fighting for all marginalized communities in this country. From the beginning, the Biden-Harris administration has shown its deep commitment to inclusivity and diversity, making qualified person nomination a cornerstone of their selection. I have no doubt that keeping the Civil Rights Department in Kristen’s capable hands will continue that tradition. “
Today’s bipartisan vote in the United States Senate confirmed Clarke with 51-48 votes.
