July 3, 2021 – San Francisco – Spokeswoman Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement on the 57th anniversary of the signing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964:

nancy pelosi“The Civil Rights Act of 1964 has been a cornerstone of our democracy for 57 years. With this landmark legislation, our nation has taken a monumental step towards living up to our basic ideals of freedom and liberty for every American. On this anniversary, we celebrate this historic victory won by generations of activists who have fought tirelessly for the blessings of freedom and justice for all.

“While the Civil Rights Act represents an important step forward, our long road to a more perfect Union remains unfinished. The right to vote is inextricably linked with the defense of our civil rights. Because of this, Congress continues the fight to get HR 1 passed, which would secure voting for voters now, and we will continue to push HR 4, the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, to secure voting for the future . We are working hard to finally pass the Equality Act, which will strengthen critical protections for LGBTQ Americans. And we’re taking action to fight systemic racism by advancing the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, legislation to transform policing and save lives.

“Driven by the energy and urgency of a new generation who peacefully take to the streets against injustice, the Democrats continue to do their utmost to not only protect, but strengthen, our cherished civil rights. In this struggle, let us pledge never to give in until every American can enjoy the sacred promise and protection of our Founding Creed: that all are created equal. “
