Home Republican Mocked for Fake ‘Outraged’ Tweet Attacking Dems’ Voting Rights Invoice
House minority whip Steve Scalise (R-LA) has been criticized and ridiculed after a tweet was posted insisting that Americans should be “outraged” by the Democratic suffrage bill, which passed the House by a margin of 220-210 on Wednesday night . His tweet ensured that “outraged” became a trend on social media.
The HR1 bill protects and extends the right to vote and was confronted with scare tactics, lies and twisted “facts” from the right. Republicans know the more Americans vote, the less likely GOP candidates are to win elections, an RNC attorney told the Supreme Court this week.
These twisted facts include the ones Rep. Scalise includes in its tweet:
Every single American should be EXCELLENT:
The Democrats have just voted to ban voter ID cards nationwide and force every state to permanently expand mail-in voting.

Based on a February 3 report by Politifact’s fact-checkers, Scalise is wrong.
HR1, also known as the For the People Act, does not prohibit photo identification across the country, nor does it force any state to permanently expand the mail-in voting – although voting rights experts agree it should do both.
“The legislation does not specifically prohibit voter ID, but it does include a voter bypass that already exists in some states,” reports Poilitfact, adding that it describes voter ID laws as “unduly burdensome”.
“The bill states that if a state requires a person to produce identification in order to cast a ballot, the state will allow the person to produce an affidavit confirming the person’s identity and under penalty of perjury to election officials that they are eligible to vote, ”which“ is common in several states, ”said David Becker, Executive Director of the Center for Election Innovation and Research.
In response to Scalise’s assertion, HR1 is forcing “every state to permanently expand mail-in reconciliation,” which is also incorrect.
“The bill does not require postal votes, but it should make it easier for voters to post ballot papers if they so wish.”
“For example, the bill states that states cannot require a voter to produce ID to vote in the mail, or that authentication or witnessing of voter signatures is required in order to cast a postal vote. However, states can still lay down some rules, e.g. B. Deadlines for Requesting a Vote. “
Scalise is spreading dangerous disinformation – which is even more dangerous given the grave threats facing today’s Capitol, which are forcing Congress not to meet before caution over possible deadly violence, that it should now choose.
It’s important to note, however, that many assumed that his characterizations of the For the People Act were correct – and that they should be included in the law to show how far Scalise’s views are from the mainstream.
Here’s what some say in response to his tweet:
You’re a liar, Steve-o

I’m sick of politicians telling me what to do. I can find out for myself. And I’ll tell you what I’m OUTRAGED of. The events of January 6, 2021 and the Capitol Rising. I am EXCELLENT from the insurgents and those who supported them. https://t.co/g2sjnzzPc2

A politician who told voters he was “David Duke with no baggage” is CHARACTERIZED by a new suffrage law?
Wow, that’s a shock. https://t.co/HgJRYMvoOo

Steve Scalise is AWARDED by Democracy. The GOP is literally trying to break our democracy. # CancelCulture

Be outraged that the GA Republicans want to keep voters waiting for hours and at the same time make it a criminal to give them water while they stand in line.
Be outraged that Texas Republicans will accept your gun license but not a student ID to vote on.
The Senate must # PassHR1

I agree that every American should be EXCELLENT on your tweet. The GOP can’t win if they don’t cheat.

The ability to vote is a civil right and should be easy to do. Why does Steve Scalise want voting to be difficult for some people? We should be outraged at the suppression of voters, NOT by helping citizens vote. pic.twitter.com/QQxIjkWjbg

DISAPPOINTED? By expanding the ability for citizens to cast legitimate ballots? https://t.co/WeZbcJ8l8O

What people should actually be outraged is that every Republican in the house is voting against covid relief and survival controls. https://t.co/CJysyYgXal

Let me take care of that for you: Every single white, racist, fragile African American is probably EXCELLENT from this. https://t.co/O8VMVekB9E

Every American should be outraged by this. Why are you not? pic.twitter.com/jZsS4Q2Esw

I am absolutely EXCELLENT about it ..
By the fact that it was not unanimously approved to make it easier for EVERY AMERICAN to vote. https://t.co/bqkiG4HRvG

Every single Aerican is outraged by YOU. You want to prevent people from voting. “Voter ID” is a barrier and you know it; Ballot papers are fully identified and barcode scanned. Mail-in voting is completely safe. You know that too. Stop trying to harm America.

Why should I be offended if I can vote by email? I don’t want to stand in line for hours with hundreds of other people … in the middle of a pandemic.
I am outraged that you want us to stand in long electoral lines.
– Michael J. Stern (@ MichaelJStern1), March 4, 2021
OMG, what makes voting easier and more accessible. What the hell is THAT democracy doing?
GTFOH, Steve.
