The Virginia House of Representatives passed a landmark civil rights law to make the civil rights office an integral part of the attorney general.
Attorney General Mark Herring established the Civil Rights Office to expand, enhance, and centralize its ongoing work to secure and expand the civil rights of Virginians, and to protect all Virginians from discrimination based on race, religion, gender / gender identity. sexual orientation, disability, veteran status, or other protected status.
The appointment of the Office of Civil Rights was the culmination of a multi-year plan to expand the powers and resources to protect the civil rights of Virgins and to place the protection of civil rights at the heart of the Attorney General’s mission.
“I founded the Civil Rights Office to improve and centralize our ongoing work to protect, defend, and expand the civil rights of Virginians, and to make sure Virginians know that as their attorney general, I will always stand up and fight for them if you are discriminated against, ”said Herring. “By making this office an integral part of the OAG, we are showing the Virgins that we have turned a past on its head when attorneys general either ignored or actually opposed the civil rights of the people they were supposed to serve. This is a huge step forward for Virginia, and I cannot thank Majority Leader Herring enough for her leadership in promoting this law and making it happen. “
HB2147, introduced by Charniele Herring, the chairman of the house majority, makes the civil rights office an integral part of the attorney general. It is said that the Civil Rights Office will exist to “investigate discrimination and take action to combat discrimination” based on race, color, religion, national origin, gender, pregnancy, birth or related illnesses, age, sexual orientation , Gender identity, disability, marital status, marital status or veteran status and will carry out the updated Commonwealth Declaration on the Civil and Human Rights of All Virginians.
“The Virginians should be proud to know that the protection and expansion of civil rights will now be an integral part of the attorney general’s mission,” said Charniele Herring. “The creation of the Civil Rights Office by Attorney General Herring showed a real vision and commitment to justice, and with this new law we want that commitment to endure. We’ve come a long way from the days when Virginia’s attorney general went all the way to the Supreme Court to keep people like me out of our public schools or to tell us who we might or might not marry. The Civil Rights Office will be a powerful and now enduring force for our Commonwealth, and I am so proud to have helped make it happen. “
The rollout of AG Herring last month was done by Norfolk Democratic Del. Jay Jones criticized the per one publication from his campaign On the day Herring announced the establishment of the office, the topic was first addressed in a speech in the House of Delegates in 2019.
